8 Free Places to Visit in Shropshire

Shropshire is a landlocked historic county in the West Midlands region of England. Bordering Wales to the west and the English counties of Cheshire to the north, Staffordshire to the east, Worcestershire to the southeast, and Herefordshire to the south it is a county that is easy to get to and that has a wealth of FREE places to go.

8. 7. Stiperstones and The Bog – Fancy being in the middle of nowhere then this is the place to go. Walks across the ridge will take you to the Bronze Age burial cairns, through areas where the Saxon warlord Wild Edric once roamed and around the former Roman lead mines.

The Bog is based on a former mining village and the former school building makes a great place to rehydrate after your exercise. We seriously recommend that you take a picnic.

6. Moreton Corbet Castle – a ruined medieval castle and Elizabethan era manor house is well worth a viewing. The ruins are well defined and there are even latrines for those seeking some toilet history. There is a lovely church close by if you want to have some shade for a while. 5. Acton Burnell Castle– Tucked away in the Shropshire countryside is the small but delightful 13th Century fortified Manor House, ideal for a look round followed by a walk through the splendid countryside. 4. Snailbeach – This was a fantastic find with many of the former lead mining buildings and equipment still standing, it made for a fabulous walk through the woods with a good amount of information on the buildings that you find https://www.shropshiremines.org.uk/snailbeach/snailbeach.html

3. Whittington Castle – Looking for the fairy-tale turrets then this is the place. A small castle with room for the kids to run round and once they have exhausted themselves you can tuck into a bite of lunch or a cooling ice cream at the onsite café. 2. One of our favourite places to visit https://www.rafmuseum.org.uk/midlands/ is a place that I have been to throughout my life and my daughters and on every visit, we have found something new. RAF Cosford takes you from the first flights of mankind through two world wars and the threat of the Cold War up to present day, there is so much to see, wear good walking shoes.

1. The British Ironworks has to be at number one on anyone’s list for a freebie. An ever-growing sculpture park showing off incredible talent and skills in the making of iron animals, motorbikes and all manor of other wonderful exhibits from junk. Eight brilliant and not one will cost you a penny, even better is the fact that they are all child friendly and doggy friendly as well.
